Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? ... What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
James 2:2-4, 14-17
Today I'm going without shoes. I encourage you to join me. Check out this video on why you might.
TOM's shoes is a for-profit company that gives one pair of shoes away to children that need it for every pair of shoes that is bought. It is an inspiring company and people of all stripes and religions are supporting it. I encourage you to practice solidarity, for just one day, with those who are less fortunate than you. And if people ask you why you are doing it, you can tell them.
And, if you can, pray and join the work of compassion around the world with your time and money. If you're a Christian, you do these things not to earn God's favor, but to follow in the footsteps of your savior who died for you, his enemy, so that you could be made his child.
